Staff at Glen Dimplex Portadown to begin work-to-rule

Workers at the Glen Dimplex plant in Portadown who are members of the Unite union are to begin industrial action on Friday over plans by the company to close the site and make staff redundant.

The action, which will include a work-to-rule, follows the announcement in February by Glen Dimplex that it plans to transfer panel and storage heating manufacturing from Newry and Portadown to its existing manufacturing site in Lithuania.

The plan is to result in the Portadown site of the heating, cooling and consumer appliances manufacturing firm closing next year, with some staff redeploying to Newry.

"The workers at Glen Dimplex have been left with no alternative but to take industrial action," said Unite general secretary Sharon Graham.

"The workforce has generated huge profits for Glen Dimplex but now management want to cast them aside and offshore production to make even greater profits."

The indefinite work-to-rule will see workers refuse to undertake overtime, refuse to mentor or train new staff.

They will also only work to contractual terms and conditions and their job description.

The company did not comment specifically on the industrial action plans.

However, a spokesperson said the company expects to increase headcount by 20% to over 1,000 staff within five years as it transitions to low carbon heating and ventilation solutions for homes and businesses.

Last month, workers at the Dunleer plant of the company voted to accept a voluntary redundancy package.

Around 60 voluntary redundancies are being sought at the two sites in the Co Louth town.

It follows a decision by the company to transfer the manufacturing of flame products from Dunleer to a long-term partner in China.

Pre-tax profits at the main Irish based unit of Glen Dimplex, which is owned by the Louth-based Naughton family, increased three-fold last year to €120.93m.

Revenues at Glen Dimplex Europe Holdings Ltd rose by 2% from €944.03m to €962.7m in the 12 months to the end of September.
