New figures from the Central Statistics Office reveal that the average weekly household spending exceeded €1,000 in 2022-2023.
The CSO's latest Household Budget Survey shows that the estimated average weekly expenditure in 2022-2023 for all households in the State was €1,007.47.
Urban households spent 6.5% more than rural households at €1,030.26 a week compared with €967.52, the CSO noted.
Today's figures show that households owned with a mortgage had the highest weekly expenditure at €1,448.08 - just over double the expenditure of households that rented at €720.74.
The CSO said that households owned with a mortgage spent the most on Housing (€320.85), almost double the amount (€174.06) spent by households that rented and more than three times the amount (€91.84) spent by households that were owned outright.
Meanwhile, households owned with a mortgage spent an average of €215.16 a week on mortgage payments (for the primary dwelling). Households that rented spent an average of €164.10 per week on Rent (for the primary dwelling).
But as a proportion of overall expenditure, rented households spent the highest proportion on Housing at 24.2%, compared with 22.2% for households owned with a mortgage and 10% for households that were owned outright.
Today's figures also show that that on average, households spent €63.11 per week on fuel and light - after the application of electricity account credits.
Of the total money spent on good consumed at home, the proportion spent on uncooked meat and Fish was lower for households with children (14.1%) and single adult households (14.8%) when compared with two adult households (17.1%) and households composed of three or more adults (17.5%).
And households with children spent on average €16.23 a week on takeaways compared with €3.36 for one adult households.
