An economist from the Department of Finance has been nominated as a director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Brendan O'Connor was nominated by the Minister for Finance, Michael McGrath.

Mr O’Connor has been an economist for two decades and joined the department in 2011.

He is currently its head of macroeconomics and leads the department’s dealings with the IMF, European Commission and OECD, along with ratings agencies.

He was appointed following an open competitive process following expressions of interest being sought and a competitive interview process.

"Mr O'Connor has played a critical role in the Department of Finance over the last decade," said Michael McGrath.

"Pending approval by the EBRD Board of my nomination, I believe Mr O’Connor will be an excellent representative for Ireland and our EBRD Constituency partners at the EBRD, in what will be a critical period in the Bank’s existence, and I will look forward to working with him in this new role."

Based in London, the EBRD was set up to foster the transition towards open market-oriented economies and to promote private and entrepreneurial initiative in Central and Eastern Europe.

It currently operates in almost 40 different countries in Southern and Eastern Mediterranean, Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.

It is publicly owned by shareholders in 73 countries, including the European Union and the European Investment Bank.
