Retailer Primark, which trades as Penneys here, is to invest over €40m in its stores in Portugal.

The retailer plans to open four new stores in four new cities in the country, as well as extending its popular Colombo store in Lisbon.

Creating over 500 new jobs as part of the expansion, Primark will now have 14 stores across the country, increasing its selling space by over 30%.

Primark has been operating in Portugal for the last 15 years.

The €40m investment will see Primark open its doors in four new cities: Allegro Shopping Centre in Montijo, Centro Comercial Espaço in Guimaraes, Palácio Do Gelo Shopping in Viseu and Covilha City Centre Retail Park in Covilhã.

Primark's investment in Portugal is part of the retailer's growth plans to expand across new and existing markets with the aim of reaching 530 stores by 2026.

Last month, Primark entered its 17th market, opening its first store in Budapest in Hungary.

Meanwhile Penneys new store in Bray in Co Wicklow is expected to open this summer.
