New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that overseas visitors to Ireland in April stayed on average 6.4 nights and spent on average €1,033 on their trips here.
This included €272 on fare, €30 on prepayments, €331 on accommodation and €400 on day-to-day expenditure
The CSO said that among the 1,738,400 passengers departing Ireland on overseas routes in April, some 549,100 (31.6%) were foreign visitors completing their trips.
The rest were Irish residents heading abroad (59.3%) and foreign same-day visitors (9.1%)).
Amongst the 549,100 foreign visitors, some 38.4% were from Great Britain, 16.3% were from the US and 7.3% were from Germany.
6.7% of the visitors came from France, 5.6% came from Spain/Portugal, 4.1% from Italy and 3.7% came from the Benelux countries.
Today's figures show that the most frequent reason for visiting Ireland was for holidays (41.6%).
The next most likely reason was to visit family or friends, with 35.9% of the visitors coming for this purpose, while a further 15.8% of the visitors had come for business or work-related reasons.
More of the visitors stayed mainly in hotels (45.9%) than in any other accommodation type, the CSO figures also reveal.
