Fashion retailer Primark has today opened its first store in Hungary - its 17th international market.

The new store is located in Arena Mall in Budapest and follows an investment of over €8m by the firm, which is owned by Associated British Foods.

Primark, which trades as Penneys here, said the new Budapest store will create 180 jobs and spans over 33,900 square feet of retail space.

Hungary marks Primark's sixth market in Central and Eastern Europe, where it now has 13 stores.

The retailer said it plans to open three further stores in the region later this year, with locations in Timisoara in Romania, Bydgoszcz in Poland and a second location in Prague in the Czech Republic.

Primark now has a workforce of over 80,000 across 17 countries in Europe and the US.

As part of its investment plans, Primark is aimimg to reach 530 stores by the end of 2026.

Currently the retailer has over 440 stores, including a ew €15m flagship store in the heart of Madrid's Salamanca district.

Meanwhile, Penneys' new store in Bray in Co Wicklow, is expected to open this summer.

Paul Marchant, Primark's chief executive, said that nearly five years after opening its first store in the region, it is delighted to celebrate another significant milestone as it enters its 17th international market with the opening of Primark Arena Mall in Budapest.
