Under Budget plans, these excise rates will be brought back to their usual level with two increases - in April and in August.

Changes announced in the Budget that will see further increases in the cost of petrol and diesel will go ahead as planned, according to the Minister for Public Expenditure, Paschal Donohoe.

The Government announced cuts to excise in 2022 in response to skyrocketing costs.

Last year the coalition postponed the lifting of these cuts until this year.

Under Budget plans, these excise rates will be brought back to their usual level with two increases - in April and in August.

Minister Donohoe said the Budget is done and those changes have been legislated for in the Finance Bill.

"The excise reductions that were brought in were brought in at a time when the price of diesel and the price of petrol was going through the roof really quickly," he said.

"Inflation is still a challenge. But inflation is beginning to fall, and the fuel and energy related component of inflation is falling quicker.

"And because of that, I do believe it is very important that the changes that we made in relation to excise during the Budget that we go ahead with the changes that were legislated for and that we make that happen," Minister Donohoe said.
