New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that of the 1,281,700 passengers departing Ireland on overseas routes in January, some 451,900 (35.3%) were foreign visitors completing their trips.

The remainder were Irish residents heading abroad (56.3%) and foreign same-day visitors (8.5%).

Amongst the 451,900 foreign visitors, 42.3% were from Great Britain, 11.1% were from the US and 5.8% were from Germany.

Today's CSO figures show that typically, visits here lasted 8.4 nights. In total, foreign visitors who departed Ireland spent a total of 3,813,800 nights in the country.

The mean cost of foreign visitors stay here was €916, which included €259 on fares, €24 on prepayments, €192 on accommodation and €441 on day-to-day expenditure.

The total estimated expenditure of foreign visitors on their trips to Ireland was €414.1m last month, the CSO added.

Today's CSO figures show that the most frequent reason was for visiting friends and family (46.8%).

They also reveal that more of the visitors stayed mainly in family/own property (54.5%) than in any other accommodation type.
