Mexican food chain Tolteca is to close its stores across Dublin.

In posts on social media last night, the firm said that due to challenging trading conditions, it will not reopen.

"Our gratitude extends to you, our valued customers, for being the heartbeat of Tolteca," the company said.

"The memories we've shared together are truly treasured, and we are thankful for your unwavering support. Thank you for being an integral part of our culinary journey," it added.

The company was set up in 2011 by its founders, who had emigrated from Colorado to Ireland.

Its first restaurant was on Baggot Street in the city.

But it subsequently opened more outlets in Suffolk Street, Rathmines and Montrose.

In October, Tolteca’s parent Poblano Ltd, notified the Companies Registration Office that it had entered the Small Company Administrative Rescue Process.

A month later, it said that a rescue plan had been agreed, under advisor Richard Maguire of Mazars.

The company recorded a loss of €361,466 for the financial year 2022, compared to a profit the previous year of €252,166.

At the time it employed around 61 people.

The firm said in its 2022 accounts that it had €471,641 of tax warehoused, which it said would become repayable this year.

It is the latest example of a food service business closing its doors amid challenging conditions in the sector.

Earlier this month the Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) said it expects a wave of food business closures to continue over the coming months, after more than 280 closed in the last six months of 2023.

The association blamed high running costs and the increase in the VAT rate in the hospitality sector for the closure and claimed the sector is in crisis.
