New figures from the Central Statistics Office today show that new electric cars licensed for the first time from January to November of this year rose by 46% compared with the same time in 2022.
The CSO said the number of new electric cars licensed rose from 15,291 from January to November of 2022 to 22,249 during the same time this year.
A total of 38,373 new cars licensed were petrol cars in the first 11 months of the year compared with 30,333 in the same time in 2022, an increase of 27%, but new diesel cars licensed have decreased by 4% in the same period.
Today's CSO figures show that the number of new cars licensed in November decreased by 3% from 2,353 to 2,291 the same month last year.
But so far this year, the number of new cars licensed is up 16% on the same time last year to 116,360 cars from 100,483.
The number of used private cars rose by 25% from 3,739 to 4,672 last month compared to November 2022, the CSO said, adding that the total number of used cars licensed in the months from January to November was up 7% on the same time last year to 46,570 from 43,681.
The figures from the CSO today also show that Volkswagen was the most popular make of new private car licensed in November, followed by Toyota, Skoda, Tesla and BMW.
Together, these five makes represent 44% of all new private cars licensed last month, the CSO added.
