Spending in Dublin City centre fell dramatically on Friday November 24 after serious public order disturbances in the city centre the previous evening.

An analysis of in-person spending on Bank of Ireland debit and credit cards in Dublin 1 and Dublin 2 for Friday 24 November showed spending almost halved compared with the same day - Black Friday - last year.

Spending also remained significantly impacted on both Saturday and Sunday of that weekend.

Bank of Ireland figures show that in-person card spend on Black Friday (November 24) in the city centre was down 46% when compared to the same time last year.

In-person card spend on Saturday (November 25) in the city centre was down 27% when compared to the equivalent Saturday in 2022, while in-person card spend on Sunday (November 26) was also 27% lower on the same day last year.

Susan Russell, CEO of Bank of Ireland Retail Ireland, said last week's violence hurt Dublin.

"It was bad for everyone who lives, works, studies, visits, and does business in the city," she said.
