An American engineering company is to create 50 new jobs in Galway, with the opening of a new European headquarters in the city.

Sterling Engineering provides services for manufacturing companies in the life science, med-tech, automotive and food sectors.

In its first expansion outside the US since the firm was founded in 1969, it will open a centre in Galway to service the European, Middle Eastern and Asian markets.

The investment is supported by IDA Ireland, which has described the development as a further vote of confidence in the region's technical and engineering environment.

The CEO of Sterling Engineering, and Longford native Dolores Connolly, said the company picked Ireland as the location of its EMEA headquarters because of its commitment to attracting industry leading technology and manufacturing companies.

"The ecosystem of universities and research clusters working together to foster engineering talent and innovation aligns well with Sterling's capacity to support clients scale their production and manufacturing needs," she said.

She also noted that Ireland is home to several existing multi-national clients that have encouraged the company to expand its geographic footprint to continue providing world class engineering services to their locations in the EMEA region.
