New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for September stood at 180,200 people, increase of 4,200 (2.4%) from the previous month.

The CSO said that the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 174,150 people in September, adding that 54.1% of these people signing on were men.

Today's figures show that the 35-44 age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register in September at 40,780 people or 23.4%.

The counties that saw the largest percentage increase in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to September were Leitrim (8.7%), Meath (4.8%) and Mayo (3.3%).

The CSO noted that a total of 111,325 people were on the Live Register for less than one year.

The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker's Allowance.

CSO figures earlier this week showed that the unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.2% in September from 4.1% a month earlier and 4.4% the same month last year.

The unemployment rate has remained between 4.1% and 4.3% all year with the economy at or very close to full employment, where just about everyone who wants a job has one.

It is also close to the all-time low of 3.9% reached just over 20 years ago during the country's so-called Celtic Tiger boom.
