The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media has said she expects to receive the new era report on RTÉ "within the week.

"I don't know if that'll be by the end of this week or very early next week - it's imminent," Catherine Martin said.

Speaking at an event at the Irish Museum of Modern Art to launch Culture Night 2023, Minister Martin said once she has the advice from New Era on RTÉ's finances, "I will be talking to Minister Donohoe on that and it (the report) will have a large bearing on it."

Responding to a question about a poll which found that 64% of people surveyed would like to see the licence fee abolished Minister Martin said, "I can understand the frustration out there and the mood of people but again I have to emphasise it is underlying public service broadcasting, and it's so important for news, current affairs, sport, arts, independent productions. It's of immense importance. We are looking at a future and I'd appeal to people to pay".

She said interim funding for RTÉ was part of last year's budget and is due to be part of this year's budget adding: "We are looking for real reform and cost cutting measures that we expect from any other public body".

When asked about President Higgin's remark on the UN Security Council Minister Martin said, "The President is absolutely entitled to his own opinion on this, but there is an obvious need there for the reform of the UN Security Council but we should never undermine the great work that's being done there as well."

Asked about Dee Forbes, the Minister said the former RTÉ Director General is unwell at the moment and can't take part in the inquiries into RTÉ at the moment.
