The Communications Workers' Union has welcomed ministerial approval of pensions increases to An Post pensioners, including the payment of arrears due which will commence from the end of September.

The CWU said it has confirmed that An Post has received ministerial consent to apply pension increases provided for under the Transformation Agreement between An Post and the Group of Unions, and the general pay agreement at An Post.

The agreements were ratified through a Labour Court recommendation and will affect the pensions of around 7,000 An Post pensioners.

A 5% increase, effective from 1 January 2022, will be paid at the end of this month together with the arrears owing.

A 2% increase is due from 1 January 2023 and a final 1% increase is due from 1 July 2023.

"Our retired colleagues have endured an unnecessary delay in receiving the payments due to them and secured by their Union," said CWU General Secretary, Seán McDonagh.

"However, we welcome the final Ministerial consents and the fact that the Company has confirmed they will start processing these pension increases with the first payment of 5% and accompanying arrears to be paid at the end of September," Mr McDonagh said.
