New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for August fell by 3.8%, or 7,000, from July to a total of 175,900 people.
The CSO said the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 186,396 for last month.
Of the 186,396 people on the unadjusted Live Register in August 2023, 52.4% were men.
Today's figures show that the 35-44 age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register in August at 43,429 people or 23.3% of the total.
They also reveal that the counties with the largest percentage increase in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to August were Leitrim up 5.7%, Kerry up 2.6%, Mayo up 1.5% and Donegal which increased by 0.8%.
The CSO also noted that a total of 23,392 people benefitted from the EU's Temporary Protection Directive included in the Live Register figures for August, up 115 from the previous month.
The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker's Allowance.
CSO figures earlier this week showed that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for August was 4.1%, unchanged from July.
Previous estimates had suggested the rate dropped to 3.8% in May and June, below the previous all-time low of 3.9% reached between October 2000 and April 2001 in the early days of the Celtic Tiger boom.
