New preliminary figures from the Central Statistics Office show that average weekly earnings rose by 4.3% to €909.77 in the second quarter of 2023, from €871.93 the same time last year.
Today's CSO figures show that average hourly earnings rose by 5.1% to €28.07 in the three months from April to June, from €26.72 last year.
The largest annual percentage increase in average weekly earnings was 9% in the Public Administration & Defence sector, the CSO noted, with wages increasing from €1,019.96 to €1,112.18.
The second largest increase was 7.5% in the Financial, Insurance & Real Estate Activities sector which rose from €1,246.87 to €1,339.81 over the year.
The CSO said that average weekly paid hours were down 0.6% to 32.4 in the three month period from 32.6 the same time in 2022.
In the five years to the second quarter of 2023, the CSO said that average weekly earnings rose by 22.1% with all sectors seeing increases to average weekly earnings over that time.
Today's CSO figures also show that average hourly total labour costs were €32.77 across all economic sectors in the three month period under review.
The highest averages for hourly total labour costs in the three months under review were €51.53 in Information & Communication, followed by €48.19 in Financial, Insurance & Real Estate Activities.
This compares to the lowest averages for hourly total labour costs of €17.58 in Accommodation & Food Service Activities, and €24.02 in Arts, Entertainment, Recreation & Other Services.
