Bank of Ireland has said customers who transfer or withdraw funds over their normal limits will have the money debited from their account.

The warning comes as the bank continues to try to fix a technical issue which has disrupted services on its online banking portal 365 online as well as its mobile banking app.

The problems first emerged this afternoon when customers were unable to access the services although contactless, card and ATM services were unaffected.

The bank has acknowledged there is an issue and said it is working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

It also apologised to customers for any inconvenience caused.

But in a statement late tonight, the bank also reminded customers that if they transfer or withdraw funds - including over their normal limits - this money will be debited from their account.

The bank said that while it is conscious customers may not be able to check their balance at this time, they should not withdraw or transfer funds if they are likely to become overdrawn.

It follows reports on social media that some customers had been able to transfer more money than they had in their Bank of Ireland accounts to other external accounts and then withdraw the cash from ATMs.

A spokesperson for the bank confirmed the situation had arisen because of the technical issues.

But they added that the value of any such transfers were limited and any money that has been withdrawn by customers beyond what was in their accounts will have to be paid back.

An Garda Síochána said it is aware of an unusual volume of activity at some ATM machines across the country tonight and it reminded people of their personal responsibility in carrying out their personal banking.
