There were 27,148 new cars registered last month, according to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, that marked an increase of 23.9% year-on-year.

It brings to 87,115 the number registered so far this year - 20.1% higher than in the same period of 2022.

Electric car sales continued to surge, with 18,458 e-cars registered in the first seven months of the year.

That is an increase of almost 65.2% on 2022.

Registrations of petrol electric hybrid cars rose 2.1% to 18,876, while petrol registrations were 31.9% higher at 33,792.

Diesel registrations, meanwhile, fell by 3.4% to 23,088.

Toyota remains the most popular car brand in the country, with almost 15,000 units sold so far this year.

That gives it a 14.3% share of the market - though that is lower than its 16.8% share in 2022.

Volkswagen, meanwhile, has grown its share to 11.2% - making it the second most popular brand in Ireland.

Hyundai's Tucson has been the most popular model of car in Ireland so far this year, with 4,812 units registered.

However that is a fall of 21.3% year-on-year.

Meanwhile Volkswagen's ID.4 was the most popular electric car in the first seven months of the year, and was the fifth most popular car model overall.
