New Central Statistics Office figures show that retail sales volumes rose 0.4% on a monthly basis in June to stand 7.6% higher on an annual basis.

When Motor Trades are excluded, the volume of retail sales rose by 0.5% in the month and by 3.7% compared to June last year.

The CSO said the largest monthly volume increases were recorded in the sale of Books, Newspapers and Stationery, which rose by 12.1%, while Furniture & Lighting sales increased by 4.7%.

Other Retail Sales - which includes items as carpets, music and video recordings, games and toys, flowers, plants, seeds, fertilisers, pet food as well as jewellery - were up 4.3% while car sales increased by 2.6%.

The highest monthly volume decreases were seen in the Fuel sector, with sales slowing by 3.4%, while Clothing, Footwear & Textiles were down 2.8% and Electrical Goods fell 2.8%.

Today's figures also show that the largest annual volume growth was seen in Other Retail Sales, which jumped by 22.6%, while Motor Trades increased by 18.8%.

Books, Newspapers & Stationery sales grew by 6.6% while and sales in Non-Specialised Stores, including supermarkets were up 5.3%.

Four sectors showed annual volume declines in June - sales in Department Stores fell by 7.7%, while Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores were down 2.5%. Sales of Electrical Goods slowed by 2.4%, and Clothing, Footwear & Textiles sales were 0.6% lower.

The CSO said the value of retail sales was 0.5% higher in June compared to May and was up 11% on the same time last year.

Excluding Motor Trades, the value of Retail Sales rose by 0.4% in the month and by 5.1% on an annual basis, the CSO added.

Today's figures also show that the proportion of retail sales conducted online (from Irish registered companies) rose to 5.8% in June from 5.2% the previous month.

It was also higher than the rate of 5% in June 2022 and 4.9% in June 2021.
