The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe said the Finance Minister is examining ways in which some corporate tax receipts could be used to insulate and protect spending in the future from the ups and downs of the economy.

"I will fully support this," Mr Donohoe said.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Paschal Donohoe said capital spending had risen by 34% in the first six months of the year, compared to the previous year.

Another €2.25 billion will be made available over the next number of years, he added, to better invest in the future of the economy and society.

The Minister also said it will be up the Finance Minister to decide the tax package in the next budget.

Mr Donohoe said the tax strategy group lays out options for Government to consider but it does not make recommendations.

He also said that over €23 billion is being allocated to health in the Budget this year which he described as a "massive increase in recent years".

Spending on health makes a massive difference here in Ireland, the Minister said.

"Our emergency departments see around 1.5 million different patients every year. Our outpatient departments see around 3 million patients every year and we do provide a very large amount of funding for this," he stated.

Mr Donohoe said he is working closely with Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly to have a level of health spending in Ireland which will deliver what is needed for patients and that will still allow other things to be done in health and in other areas of Government spending.

He said there is a massive increase in the demand hospitals face since the pandemic.
