CSO: Public transport usage continues to surpass 2019 levels

Public transport usage continues to surpass pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019, new figures from the Central Statistics Office show.

The number of bus journeys in Dublin for the week beginning 22 May 2023, was 8% higher when compared to the same week in 2019.

The number of bus journeys outside of Dublin for that same week was up 24% on the 2019 figures.

Meanwhile, Luas journeys increased by 28% and 4% when compared to the same week last year, and in 2019.

Today's data also reveals that 3,332 new vehicles were licensed in May, an increase of 47% when compared to the same month last year.

When it comes to air travel, the number of passengers travelling through Dublin airport last month was 17% higher than in May 2022, and 2% higher than in 2019, before Covid.

At Cork Airport, passenger numbers were up 29% in May when compared to the same month last year, and up 10% on 2019.

For Shannon Airport, the number of passengers was 11% higher compared with May 2022, and 33% higher than May 2019.
