New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for May stood at 182,000, up by 800 or 0.4% from April.
The CSO said the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 176,999 in May.
Today's CSO figures show the counties that saw the largest percentage increase in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to May 2023 were Kerry (29.5%) and Leitrim (29.5%).
Meanwhile, the number of people on the Live Register for one year or more in May was 63,268, down 2,410 from a year earlier.
There were 113,731 people (64.3%) on the Live Register for less than one year, the CSO added.
Today's figures also show that 22,810 people were benefitting from the EU's Temporary Protection Directive in May, down 283 from the previous month.
The CSO said that people arriving in Ireland from Ukraine under the EU's Temporary Protection Directive can access a wide range of Department of Social Protection supports.
Figures earlier this week from the CSO show that the unemployment rate hit an all-time low of 3.8% in May, falling below the previous record of 3.9% hit in April 2001.
Unemployment had stood at 4.2% the same month last year.
