Ryanair said it flew a record 17 million passengers in May, its highest for a single month and a 10% increase from a year earlier.

The previous traffic record was 16.9 million in August 2022.

The airline's load factor - how many seats it fills on each flight - also increased from 92% to 94% in May.

Ryanair has only twice previously flown more than 16 million passengers in a month, last July and August when it carried 16.8 million and 16.9 million passengers respectively.

Ryanair has said it expects to trim some flights in July and August due to delivery delays from Boeing.

But it said it will still hit its target of growing passenger numbers to 185 million this fiscal year from the 169 million in the 12 months to the end of March.

The airline said today it operated over 94,400 flights in May. Over 300 flights, which affected about 54,000 passengers were cancelled due to ATC strikes during the month, it added.

On a rolling 12 month basis, Ryanair said it has carried a total of 171.9 million passengers, a jump of 39% on the 123.82 million carried the same time during the previous 12 month period.
