SIMI: New car sales edge closer to pre-Covid levels

New car registrations jumped almost 43% in May when compared to the same month last year, according to new figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

So far this year, new car registrations are up 18% to 74,542 when compared to the same period last year.

"New car sales increased again in May when compared to the same month last year, and now new cars sales are edging closer to Pre-COVID levels," said Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General.

"Some easing of supply difficulties has resulted in improvement in delivery times, and this has led to a significant growth particularly in electric vehicle (EV) registrations," he added.

1,725 new electric vehicles were registered in May, up 132% on the same month last year.

Between January and May, 12,875 new electric cars have been registered, up 55% on the same period last year.

Electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and hybrids continue to increase their market share, with a combined share so far this year of almost 43%.

Petrol remains the most popular, accounting for over 32% of new cars sold, while diesel made up just over 22%.

Hybrids accounted for 17.5%, while electric made up just over 17% and plug-in electric hybrid account for almost 8%.

Today's figures show that the top models for new car sales were the Hyundai Tucson, the Kia Sportage, the Toyota Corolla, the Toyota Yaris Cross and the Volkswagen ID.4.

Meanwhile, the top EV models were the Volkswagen ID.4, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Tesla Model Y, the Skoda Enyaq and the Kia EV6.
