Community workers who are members of Fórsa and SIPTU have voted in favour of a 5% pay increase.

The deal relates to staff in community sector organisations funded by the Department of Social Protection.

These include Community Employment Schemes, the Job Initiative Scheme, the Rural Social Scheme and Tús.

The agreement includes a mechanism for the workers to negotiate future wage increases.

The pay proposals were issued by the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) following discussions last month with the Department of Social Protection.

In an aggregate ballot of 800 Fórsa and SIPTU members, 82% voted in favour on a ballot turnout of 60%.

"The new measures provide for a 3% increase in basic pay from April 1, and a 2% increase from November," said Fórsa official Tony Martin.

"This is a group who provide an essential range of services in their communities, but who haven't seen a pay improvement in a long time," Mr Martin said.

Community and voluntary sector workers staged a number of strikes last year calling for better pay and conditions.

"Unfortunately, this deal only applies to community sector workers in organisations funded by the Department of Social Protection," said SIPTU Community Sector Organiser, Brendan Carr.

"Community workers in other organisations funded by different government departments and agencies also need a pay increase," Mr Carr said.

"We will continue to bring their demands to the Government and will not hesitate to carry out further industrial action to secure pay justice for them," he added.
