New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that wholesale electricity prices decreased by 8.7% in March from February and were 50.5% lower in March of this year compared to the same time last year.

But the CSO said that producer prices for food products rose by 5.2% in the 12 months to March.

Today's figures show that producer prices for fruit and vegetables jumped by 18.2% in the year to March, while fish and fish products were up 17.5%, dairy products increased by 15.4% and producer prices for grain, milling, starches and animal feeds were up 11.6%.

The CSO said that overall wholesale price inflation showed a small increase in March with a rise of 0.5% to the overall producer price index for the manufacturing industries in the month.

Producer prices for products sold on the domestic market are now 9.2% higher than they were in March last year, with export producer prices rising by 1.1% and overall producer prices by 1.5% in the year.
