Luas and bus journeys exceeded pre-pandemic figures in February - CSO

New Central Statistics Office figures show that while public transport volumes stayed below 2019 figures in 2022, the number of Luas and bus journeys exceeded pre-pandemic figures in February of this year.

The CSO said the number of bus journeys in Dublin for the week beginning 20 February was 10% higher compared with the number of journeys in the same week in 2019.

The number of bus journeys outside Dublin during the same week exceeded 2019 figures by 31%.

But rail journeys continue to stay below pre-pandemic figures last month.

Today's CSO figures also show there were 13 fatalities on Irish roads in February compared with 20 in January.

Meanwhile, the number of passengers in Dublin airport in February of this year was almost twice that of February 2022 numbers, and 2% higher than that seen in the same month in 2019 - before Covid-19.

A total of 2,336,794 passengers were handled by Dublin, Cork, Knock and Shannon airports in February compared with 2,271,760 for the same month in 2019.

2,038,737 passengers handled by Dublin airport in February of this year compared with 1,993,325 passengers in February 2019, the CSO added.
