Irish and Sunday Independent owner, Mediahuis, saw its digital subscriber numbers in Ireland grow by almost a third last year compared to the previous twelve months.

But publishing results for 2022 the company, which introduced its subscription model in this country three years ago, did not disclose how many digital subscribers it has in Ireland.

The Belgian headquartered firm said subscription growth came under pressure last year because of the difficult economic context.

Total subscriber numbers stayed steady at about 1.8 million, as did turnover from newspaper sales.

The company said advertising revenue rose slightly, but steep increases in energy and paper costs combined with significant distribution issues in the Netherlands and Germany negatively impacted the final result.

Despite this, overall the group had consolidated turnover of €1.2 billion last year, up €92m on 2022.

This was driven in part by the acquisition of German business Aachener Verlagsgesellschaft as well as a number of purchases in Ireland.

Operating profit came in at €155.7m, down €10m on last year, with a net profit of €65.3m, €53m lower than 2021's performance owing to a gain from a once-off disposal that year.

"As a group, we showed that we are resilient," said Gert Ysebaert, CEO Mediahuis group.

"The digital transition continues, although at a slower pace than in the Covid years."

Across the group digital subscribers rose by 13% compared to 2022, with print subscriptions falling 11%.

Last year saw Mediahuis diversify its portfolio further, including in Ireland with the acquisition of car listings website Carzone.ie and online comparison site Switcher.ie.

But it also reduced its printing capacity, closing print plants in Luxembourg last year and here in Ireland earlier this year.

As well as the Irish and Sunday Independent newspapers, Mediahuis Ireland owns independent.ie, the Belfast Telegraph, Sunday World, The Herald, Sunday Life, Ireland’s Own and a range of regional titles.
