The Unite trade union has announced a one-day strike at forklift maker Cargotec in Dundalk.

Unite represents more than 200 workers at the facility and is taking the action in a dispute over the transfer of terms and conditions for staff.

The strike will take place on 10 March after 93% of balloted members voted in favour of industrial action.

Unite is accusing Cargotec of failing to engage meaningfully at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) and the Labour Court regarding proposals to transfer workers' terms and conditions.

The union claims that established jobs, pay and conditions could come under future attack.

Unite regional officer Brian Hewitt said that the company had shown disregard for the state's industrial relations procedures.

"But they should pay heed to the overwhelming 93% vote in favour of industrial action," Mr Hewitt said.

"This reflects our members’ determination to protect their terms and conditions going forward."

"Unless the company engages collectively and meaningfully with our members, strike action will commence with a one-day stoppage on 10 March", Mr Hewitt added.

Cargotec said it was informed through the media that strike action will be taking place and that it is awaiting confirmation from Unite.

The company said it recently completed a transfer of undertakings process (TUPE) which was carried out following a full consultation process, in addition to engagement with the WRC and the LRC.

"Unite was invited to participate in the process," Cargotec said.

"During the consultation process, we duly notified, informed and consulted with employees and/or their representatives in advance of the transfer coming into effect."

"Under TUPE Regulations the employee's terms and conditions, including pay, are fully protected," the company added.

Cargotec said it always abides by relevant legislation and will continue to engage with employees to address their concerns.
