The Government has issued a warning over scam text messages asking people to click on a link to claim electricity benefits.
The Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications said it had been notified about the messages which contain a link that looks like the Government website gov.ie.
"There is no such scheme being offered by the government and people are warned not to click on the link or enter any personal details," the Department said.
Scams where fraudsters use mobile phone text messages to trick you into opening malicious attachments or links are known as 'smishing' - a combination of the words 'SMS' and 'phishing'.
People are advised to be careful of any texts or emails that ask for personal details or ask you to click a link.
Phone and internet users should never respond to suspicious messages that direct you to send money or change your bank details and should never click on any suspicious links.
People are advised to check the address of websites they've been directed to and to take a screenshot of any suspicious texts or emails.
If someone believes they are the victim of a cybercrime they should contact their local Garda station.
