There was an increase of 1,000 persons on the seasonally adjusted Live Register for January of this year compared to the same time last year.

The unadjusted Live Register total stood at 184,736 persons for January, the CSO added.

The 35-44 age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register in January 2023 at 43,867 people, or 23.7% of the total.

All counties saw an increase in the number of persons on the Live Register in the 12 months to January of this year.

The CSO said the counties with the biggest increase in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to January were Kerry (41.7%) and Leitrim (36.8%).

The counties with the lowest increase in numbers on the Live Register were Kildare (1.6%) and Tipperary (2.6%).

Today's figures also show that a total of 22,877 people were on the EU's Temporary Protection Directive in January, an increase of 1,094 from the previous month.

People arriving in Ireland from Ukraine under the EU's TPD can access a wide range of Department of Social Protection supports, including Job Seeker's Allowance.

Figures earlier this week from the CSO showed that the unemployment rate stood at 4.4% in January, the same level as December following an upward revision.

The jobless rate has remained between a 21-year low of 4.2% and 4.5% over the last nine months amid a tight labour market.
