100 new jobs are to be created by Siemens Healthineers in Swords, with the launch of a new laboratory equipment research and development centre.
It follows a multi-million investment by the company in the facility where new lab instruments will be developed.
The equipment will be used by Siemens Healthineers customers around the world to detect infectious diseases, cancer and blood disorders.
65 of the new roles will be in engineering in specialties such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, software engineering, systems engineering and data science, with recruitment set to begin right away.
The company already has had an existing manufacturing facility at the site in Swords since 1966 and employs hundreds of staff there.
Equipment built on site include haematology and immunoassay analysers, which are exported to over 50 countries.
"The investment at Swords will build on our existing expertise in healthcare manufacturing, adding a critical research and development focus," said Dennis Gilbert, Head of R&D for Siemens Healthineers.
The investment will take place over a number of years and Fred O'Brien, vice-president of manufacturing and managing director of Swords for Siemens Healthineers said it highlights the calibre of the existing team at the plant.
He said the investment will create a hub of skilled and experienced engineers and researchers, broadening the scope of careers in the local area.
The investment was supported by the Government through the IDA and was welcomed by the Taoiseach.
"This new Centre is testament to Ireland's strong reputation for R&D," said Leo Varadkar.
"Exciting new technology like that which will be developed in Swords, can make a real difference to people’s lives, to patient outcomes and to healthcare systems globally."
IDA interim CEO, Mary Buckley, said the investment demonstrates the company’s continued commitment to Ireland.
