What do An Post, Penneys, Stripe and the Department of Justice have in common?

They all reported a gender pay gap of zero or near-zero per cent.

Currys, Irish Rail, Musgraves and Kerry County Council posted negative gender pay gaps where women are paid more than men.

There is still a significant number of firms that have gender pay gaps above the Irish average of 11.3%, including RTÉ which reported a gender pay gap of 13% in favour of men.

The inaugural reporting of the gender pay gap in Ireland has pushed organisations to be more transparent about pay gaps in their organisations.

Mary Connaughton, Director of CIPD Ireland, the professional body for HR, said, "Overall, we're seeing quite a range of diversity coming through and from our initial analysis we're see that there are good organisations, but there are organisations with a gender pay gap close to 50% so there is a lot of work to be done in Ireland to close the gender pay gap."

She said companies are re-evaluating their recruitment process, making sure that it's more competency based and that there isn't a bias coming in so that women have a fair chance to be shortlisted and appointed.

"We're also seeing that there's much more focus in terms of the promotion and how promotions are happening. We're seeing that they look at their overall policy, working with employees to see what sort of policies would help make a better workplace. They are improving their family policies with access to family leave," she said.

"And another thing that is coming through is really around pay scales so we are seeing in general that the public sector is coming through as overall being lower than the private sector and there's much more transparency in terms of pay scales and increments in the public sector, and we think that's a contributory factor, and is a trend across Europe."

While there is capacity in the legislation for a review to take place, Ms Connaughton said the real impact on companies will be attracting and retaining talent.

"If you are working in an organisation that has a high gender pay gap, that's going to make women feel is this a good place to work and in the current labour market where companies are trying to retain and attract talent, it actually has a real importance from a talent agenda," she said.

"Most employees working in an organisation where there are more than 250 employees, they will be able to go and find their gender pay gap for their organisation and it's not terribly positive if you are finding there is a big gap," she added.
