Irish woman and former Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) official, Esther Lynch, has been elected General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).
The announcement was made at a meeting of the ETUC Executive Committee in Brussels today.
The ETUC represents 45 million members from 93 trade union organisations in 41 European countries as well as ten European Trade Union Federations.
Ms Lynch was elected as ETUC Deputy General Secretary in May 2019, after four years as Confederal Secretary.
Before joining the ETUC, she was the Legislation and Social Affairs Officer with ICTU.
ICTU General Secretary, Owen Reidy, welcomed Ms Lynch's appointment.
"The movement in Europe has a formidable champion of workers' rights at the helm, it is a proud day for the Irish Trade Union movement," Mr Reidy said.
"Now more than ever, we need strong voices speaking on behalf of and protecting the rights of European workers in EU decision-making," he added.
