Irish Independent owner Mediahuis has agreed a deal to buy Switcher.ie, the Irish price comparison site for broadband, energy, mobile, money and mortgages.

Switcher.ie said that over the last year it has helped nearly 60,000 households switch and save money as the energy crisis continues to hit consumers.

In a statement, Mediahuis said Switcher.ie has an "impressive" track record of growth and profitability.

Xavier van Leeuwe, of CEO Mediahuis Marketplaces, said today's deal supports the company's determination to sustainably grow in online comparison.

"We have full confidence that the combination of the highly skilled team and our media expertise will pave the way for Switcher's success as the clear number one in the Irish comparison market," he added.

Carl Gaywood, Director at Switcher, said the company has not only helped thousands of Irish consumers make informed decisions about their finances but also developed a strong brand and loyal following.

"Mediahuis share the same vision, culture, ethos and values that have made Switcher the success it has been so far. Together we will share the mission to inform and empower consumers and we look forward to being part of the journey with Mediahuis," Mr Gaywood added.

Last month Mediahuis bought online car site Carzone from the Auto Trader Group for €30m.

Headquartered in Dublin, Carzone is the second largest automotive marketplace for retailers and consumers in Ireland.
