New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register for September stood at 184,100 people, a decrease of 1% on the August figures.
The CSO said the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 179,055 people in September.
It noted that of these, 53.2% were men and 74.2% were Irish.
The 35-44 age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register in September at 41,841 people, or 23.4%.
Today's figures show that the counties that saw the greatest increase in the 12 months to September were Clare (26.7%) and Kerry (23.1%). Tipperary was the only county that saw a decrease.
The CSO also said that 13,505 people who had arrived from Ukraine were benefitting from the EU's Temporary Protection Directive last month, an increase of 1,654 on August. These are included in today's Live Register figures.
Figures earlier this week from the CSO showed that the unemployment rate was unchanged on a monthly basis in September at 4.3% and was down from 5.2% from the same time last year.
The rate of 4.3% in September was also lower than the pre-pandemic level of 4.9% recorded in September 2019.
The jobless rate has bounced up and down on a monthly basis this year in a tight labour market and it hit a 21-year low of 4.2% in July.
