Average weekly and hourly earnings rise in Q2 - CSO

Both average weekly earnings and average hourly earnings rose in the second quarter of 2022, the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office show.

The CSO said that average weekly earnings rose by 2.4% to €871.62 in the second quarter of this year from €850.81 the same time last year.

Average hourly earnings increased by 2.7% to €26.78 from €26.07, the CSO added.

It noted that average weekly paid hours recorded no change in the year from the second quarter of 2021 to the second quarter of 2022 and remained at 32.6.

Today's figures show that the sector with the highest average hourly total labour costs was the Information & Communication sector with a rate of €48.39, followed by the Financial, Insurance and Real Estate Activities sector at €45.72.

The sectors with the lowest cost of employing labour were the Accommodation and Food Services Activities sector with average hourly total labour costs of €14.72 and the Arts, Entertainment, Recreation and Other Service Activities sector with €22.80.

Meanwhile, the job vacancy rate at the end of the second quarter of 2022 was 1.6%.

This was unchanged from 1.6% at the end of the first quarter of this year and up from 1.2% at the end of the second quarter of 2021.

The sectors with the highest job vacancy rate in the three months from April to June were the Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities sector with a rate of 4.4%, followed by the Financial, Insurance and Real Estate Activities sector with a rate of 3.1%.

Today's CSO figures also reveal that average hourly other labour costs jumped by 43% to €4.16 from €2.91 the same time last year.

The CSO said the major factor in this increase was the winding down of the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS).
