2,060 commencement notices for new homes were lodged in June, according to data released by the Department of Housing.
That is over 30% lower than the number of notices received during the same month last year.
However, the department pointed out that notices received in June 2021 included some of the backlog from previous months during to the Covid-19 related restrictions on constriction activity early last year.
In the past 12 months, 29,343 commencement notices for new homes were received.
That is 7.6% higher than previous 12-month period of July 2020 to June 2021, when 27,264 notices were lodged.
With the exception of 2020, when significant restrictions on home-building existed due to the pandemic, the department said the number of residential homes for which commencement notices were received has increased every year since 2015.
That is the earliest year for which this data is available.
