Business representative group Ibec has launched a new guidance note on gender identity and expression in the workplace, supported and endorsed by the Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI).
"Transgender and gender variant people are active members of Irish society and play an important role in organisations across the country," said Kara McGann, Head of Social Policy at Ibec.
According to Ibec, around 1% of the population will experience some form of gender variance.
"This means that many organisations will have transgender employees as part of their workforce or will liaise with transgender candidates as part of the recruitment process," Dr McGann said.
Ibec said it hopes this new guidance it has developed with TENI will inform and educate employers on how to best support transgender individuals in their workplace.
"TENI's mission is to improve the lives and advance the rights and equality of trans people and their families," said Sara Phillips, Chair of TENI.
"The business community has an important role to play in ensuring trans people feel recognised and supported in the workplace and we are pleased to endorse Ibec’s guidance note being launched today."
