A survey of 857 farmers carried out between December and the end of February, has found 60% say input costs are the biggest challenge for their businesses in 2022.

The survey, conducted by farming and agribusiness services firm IFAC also found 94% of farmers believe in the need to reduce greenhouse gases and 40% believe other sectors need to play their part.

97% of farmers are also open to incorporating renewable energy on their farms.

The survey also found 36% of farmers believe educating consumers on how food is produced would help them, and two out of three farmers have no succession plan in place.

20% say the biggest succession challenge is the lifestyle not appealing to the next generation.

Finding and retaining employees is a concern for one fifth of farmers, particularly in the dairy sector and one third of beef farmers struggle to balance farming with off-farm jobs.
