Ukrainians fleeing the conflict in their home country should be able to get car insurance cover to drive in Ireland following developments to make it simpler.

New car policies can now be secured here on the basis that a Ukrainian driver's licence will effectively be treated the same as EU licences.

This will make the route to securing cover more straightforward according to online brokers, Coverinaclick.ie.

"When it comes to driving experience, i.e., whether a person has previous crashes or claims, the word of the driver will be deemed sufficient, rather than insist paperwork from their previous insurer, as would normally be the case," said Jonathan Hehir, Managing Director of Coverinaclick.ie.

"This is a unique situation, and we applaud the flexibility shown by some insurers who, in some cases, are agreeing to effectively take on more risk without additional premium".

The company also said that in certain cases, it is possible to add a Ukrainian driver who is aged above 25 to some existing Irish car insurance policies free for up to 30 days, once they have a full clean Ukrainian driving licence.

Authorities and companies here have been trying over recent weeks to simplify normal bureaucracy for those arriving here from Ukraine in search of refuge from the war.
