Peter Vandermeersch has been announced as the new CEO of Mediahuis Ireland, the group which acquired Independent News and Media in 2019.
The change has been announced by the group at their headquarters in Belgium.
Outgoing CEO, Marc Vangeel, will remain as a board member of Mediahuis Ireland and will take up a strategic role with the wider group.
Mr Vandermeersch was previously editor of the Brussels-based newspaper De Standaard and the Amsterdam-based daily NRC.
He has worked since 2019 in Dublin in close cooperation with Marc Vangeel as a member of the Mediahuis Ireland Executive Committee together with Ian Keogh, CEO of Reach Group who will remain in that role.
Mr Vandermeersch said Mediahuis plays a crucial role in quality journalism on the island of Ireland.
"Together with over 700 colleagues we are more than ever committed to providing strong and independent journalism in print and on our successful digital platforms," he said.
"I am honoured to take on the role of CEO and I would like to thank Marc for his huge contribution to the Irish group and wish him every success in his wider Mediahuis role."
Marc Vangeel, who was previously CEO of Mediahuis Netherlands, said Mr Vandermeersch is very well acquainted with the Irish publishing business and at the helm, the Irish business will continue to thrive.
Mediahuis group CEO Gert Ysebaert said Mr Vangeel will continue to use his expertise in the further international development of the group in the coming years.
"And with Peter at the helm of our Irish organisation, I am convinced that Mediahuis Ireland will continue its strong growth and enjoy a bright future," he said.
