Irish consumers spent on average €503 with websites based in Ireland last year, up 41% on the previous year.
A survey carried out by PayPal reveals that spend was higher on websites in Ireland versus international sites, where the average spend was €329.
Female respondents spent considerably more with Irish websites, estimating an annual spend of €534, compared to €351 spent by male respondents.
The data shows that Wicklow consumers spent the most on Irish websites, with an average spend of €972.
Carlow, Meath, Monaghan and Offaly finished off the top five counties.
Over three quarters of consumers purchased products from international websites last year, with people from Carlow spending the most with an average of €678.
This was followed by Wicklow, Offaly, Longford and Kildare.
The most popular non-Irish destinations to buy from were the UK, Europe, and China.
Meanwhile, some 16% of respondents bought from websites in the US.
Online shopping trends
62% of Irish people surveyed said they plan to shop online more this year.
Almost half said they would do all their shopping online if they could, with those aged between 25-34 most keen on this idea.
Just under a quarter of over 55s said they would do all their shopping online if they could.
56% of Irish adults said the pandemic has permanently changed the way they pay for products and services, with almost three quarters preferring cashless transactions.

"Regardless of where we buy from though, it’s clear that online shopping has become a critical convenience for Irish people, not only during the pandemic but as part of our regular, busy lives," she added.
