New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the easing of Covid restrictions last month led to an increase in traffic on the country's roads.

Traffic volumes rose by almost 20% in Dublin in the last week of January when compared to the first week of the month.

But Dublin car volumes were still lower than in the same, pre-Covid week in 2019.

Regionally, car volumes are almost 10% lower, today's CSO figures show.

But the volume of heavy goods vehicles was above pre-covid levels, increasing as much as 14.5% in Dublin compared to 2019.

Bus and rail journeys were also up year on year but are still only two thirds of the levels seen before the outbreak of Covid.

Meanwhile, the number of passengers travelling through Dublin airport in January 2022 was almost five times that of January 2021.

But the CSO noted that the number of passengers travelling through Dublin airport in January 2022 was still 53.4% lower than January 2020 - with 969,467 passengers using the airport last month compared with 2,082,481 in January 2020.
