The amount of shipping using Belfast Harbour increased last year, according to annual trade figures issued by the port.

In what its statement describes as a record year, the port handled 25.6 million tonnes of goods in 2021, up 9% on the previous year.

Roll-on roll-off freight was up 12% to almost 600,000 units.

Container traffic increased by 15% to 132,000 units, the highest level since 2008.

Bulk tonnage was up 3% to 9.76 million tonnes.

"Following the UK’s exit from the European Union, changes in Roll-on Roll-off traffic volumes on routes between Ireland and Great Britain have taken place, with all NI Ports, including Belfast, experiencing improved trade volumes whilst grace periods continue to apply," said Michael Robinson, Belfast Harbour's Port Director.

Ferry passengers increased 69% to almost 1.5 million people, following the easing of Covid-related travel restrictions.

Stena Line’s Belfast-Liverpool route saw 400,000 passengers, up 150% on 2020.

72 cruise ships also visited the port in 2021.
