The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) has appointed Niall Byrne as the new director of the organisation.

Mr Byrne spent the last five years as Registrar and Chief Officer of the Pharmacy Regulator, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI).

Before that, he held the positions of Head of State Boards and Corporate Services with the Public Appointments Service and Deputy Director of Regulation at the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA).

During his time at HIQA, he was responsible for the regulation of residential services for older people and for adults with disabilities.

"I would like to take this moment, on behalf of the whole organisation, to welcome Mr. Byrne to the RTB at a crucially important time," said Tom Dunne, Chairperson of the Residential Tenancies Board.

"Niall is a highly respected expert in regulation who will play a key role in addressing highly complex issues in the rental sector in years to come."

In a statement, Mr Dunne thanked Pádraig McGoldrick, who has served as Interim Director over the last two years.

"While it must be acknowledged that this is a challenging time for the sector, thanks to the effort of Pádraig, the Executive and staff, Niall will also be joining the organisation at a time of growth and opportunity," he said.
