Childhood Services Ireland, the Ibec trade association representing childcare providers, has called on the Government to maintain the EWSS support at its current level.

The association said the enhanced rate of the EWSS paid to childcare services is essential in maintaining the 'play pod' system, which it said reduces the risk of Covid outbreaks in creches by separating children into smaller groups

"Without financial support, childcare services will really struggle to cope," said Darragh Whelan, Director of Childhood Services Ireland.

"The enhanced level of EWSS supports paid to childcare providers has allowed them to afford the staff required to operate the play pod system," he added.

Mr Whelan said further challenges in the sector are emerging as some parents are withdrawing their children from childcare, with many now back working remotely.

"The childcare sector plays a crucial role in managing this public health crisis by providing education and care to the children of frontline workers and essential workers.

"The continuation of supports to maintain play pods is essential in suppressing rising Covid figures," Mr Whelan said.

Mr Whelan said the association has been engaging with the Department of Children over the past few days on the issue and he hope the Government will consider their concerns.
