Krispy Kreme's plans for its first Dublin City centre outlet have suffered a setback with the company now stating it will not be open until early 2022.
Planning documents lodged with Dublin City Council on behalf of the US-owned doughnut maker stated it intended to open its Central Plaza unit on Dame Street "circa Christmas 2021" subject to planning permission.
However, the US owned company will miss out on the busy Christmas season at its planned new city centre outlet with Dublin City Council putting its planning application for Krispy Kreme signage on hold after requesting further information on what is planned.
A spokeswoman for Krispy Kreme Ireland said that the store is due to open in early 2022 with construction work well underway and progressing.
The spokeswoman said that its planned store for Swords Pavilion in north Dublin will open at 8am on November 25th.
Krispy Kreme is seeking planning permission for three signs for the glazed facade of its Central Plaza unit.
In its letter seeking additional information on the Central Plaza outlet, the Council has stated that planning permission for the unit is for restaurant/café and any takeaway element should be ancillary to the main restaurant/café use.
The Council states that given the minimal seating/dining facilities proposed, the drawings appear to suggest the premises may be used mainly as a takeaway service, or which the unit does not have a planning permission.
The council states that in the interests of clarity, consistency and orderly development, Krispy Kreme "is requested to clearly illustrate the intended use of the unit and submit additional drawings/information if necessary".
The Council report also states that there are "serious reservations" regarding the visual impact of the corporate Krispy Kreme signage proposed for the unit and the surrounding context.
The report states that it is considered reasonable that Krispy Kreme reconsider the design of the proposed signage "to ensure a more mannerly and less garish signage proposal is introduced at this location".
As a result, the Council has requested Krispy Kreme to lodge revised plans for the main signage by reducing its height with subtle backlit illumination and more muted colouring.
The opening of Krispy Kreme's first store in Ireland in Blanchardstown in September 2018 was greeted by a consumer mania not seen in Ireland in recent years where there was a queue of 300 people when the store opened its doors at 7am on its first day.
The Central Plaza application will become 'live’ once the additional information has been lodged.
