Nóirín Hegarty has been appointed as the new Ireland editor of The Times and The Sunday Times.

Ms Hegarty was previously the vice-president digital content at Lonely Planet.

She is also a former editor of the Sunday Tribune, a former deputy editor of the Evening Herald and she also edited independent.ie.

Ms Hegarty will replace Frank FitzGibbon who retired last year and will join the publications next month.

"I am delighted to get the opportunity to lead The Sunday Times and Times Ireland team at a very interesting time in the politics and current affairs of Ireland and Northern Ireland," said Ms Hegarty.

"I look forward to working with journalists I have long admired, and to joining the iconic Sunday Times and Times brand, which is globally recognised for excellent journalism."

Ms Hegarty will report to Emma Tucker, editor of The Sunday Times, and John Witherow, editor of The Times.
